evelyne film still

Evelyne is the story of a Zimbabwean refugee living with her mother and young daughter in a bucolic, coastal North American city. One day leaving work, her world collapses after a sexual assault that sets off a chain of events that will change her life in ways she can’t have imagined.

Inspired by true events, Evelyne was collaboratively written by verité filmmaker Carl Bessai and newcomer Rumbie Muzofa, who also plays the main character. Created with a blend of improvisation and scripted dialogue, and performed by a mix of trained actors and non-actors, Evelyne is a film about the immigrant experience that touches on divisions of race, gender and the endurance of the human spirit
